It’s National Caregiver’s Month, we love them. Here are 4 tips to make sure your loved ones are getting the best care possible.
- Residents have a right to be treated with dignity and respect. Most nursing homes and assisted living facilities do their best to give the highest care possible. However, there are occasional stories of abuse, neglect, theft of property, and even criminal conduct. File a complaint with the State of Florida or call an attorney if a loved one is suffering abuse.
- Know rates or fees. Residents, or their representatives, should know the costs are for care. Ask for an explanation of all costs and fees. Find out how they will bill insurance, Medicare, Medicaid, or other sources. Find out if there are any hidden costs involved with care. As for itemized statements of monthly bills.
- Residents have the freedom to choose social activities. Residents of nursing homes or assisted living facilities have rights to take part in social, religious and community activities. Residents have rights to organize and participate in resident groups, go outside, and have unrestricted private communication. Make sure loved ones are have access to the social activities they want and need.
- Right to manage financial affairs. Residents may manage their own money. They do not give up their rights to make financial decisions. They should never feel forced into making any financial decisions. Before going into a nursing home or assisted living facility, talk with an experienced estate planning lawyer about the need for a living will, designation of health care surrogate, or power of attorney, or other necessary documents.
