You’ve been injured in a car wreck (or were injured some other way through no fault of your own) and you need help. You know you should be able to recover money for your medical bills. You know that you need help dealing with insurance companies. You know that you may need a lawyer.
You can decide to use a lawyer based upon an ad. Many lawyers spend a lot of money to try to impress people with well-produced and expensive television ads. Many lawyers plaster themselves all over buses, billboards, and even electronic signs on their buildings. How do you know if these lawyers know what they are doing? Hiring a lawyer based simply upon an ad may be a good decision or it might be the worst decision you have ever made.
Personal injury claims can be very complex. They can take longer than you might expect. They can be very frustrating. They require accident investigation, insurance negotiations, and documentation of medical procedures and expenses. Also, hospitals, doctors, health insurance companies, Medicare, Medicaid, and other health related businesses expect to be repaid out of your settlement or claim.
While you want money as soon as possible, you also want to make sure that you don’t settle for too little or too soon. What if you learn six months after you settle that you need surgery? It’s almost impossible to reopen your claim once you’ve settled it, so what is the right time to settle? How do you decide if you need to file a lawsuit?
What if your medical bills exceed the person who caused the accident’s insurance policy limits? How does uninsured motorist coverage work? Will health care companies and health insurance companies reduce their bills if there is not enough money to pay them back? Unfortunately, lawyer ads usually tell you nothing about whether the lawyer knows anything about the practicalities of handling an insurance claim.
The truth is that not every personal injury case needs a lawyer. However, when you need a personal injury lawyer you need a good one. Legal ethics rules will not allow us to tell you that we are the best personal injury lawyers on the Gulf Coast. We won’t run an ad telling you that we are smarter or work harder than other lawyers. We will, though, provide you with information so that you can decide for yourself.
